Historical Sources

The battle is mentioned in two groups of sources – in England they are the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and the Chronicle written by John of Worcester.  In Normandy William of Jumièges was followed probably by a lost account by William of Poitiers, a history entitled Quedam Exceptiones and an account by Orderic Vitalis.

When the two separate traditions are cross-checked they produce a consistent narrative which matches perfectly the tide and dusk data for 26th June 1069.  Historic landscape analysis also supports this narrative.
